The former national coordinator for health IT is pushing the health industry to rethink the care paradigm. Dr. Karen DeSalvo understands the complexities of patient care and technologys role in the process. In post-Katrina New Orleans, she established a model of neighborhood-based primary care to help vulnerable populations. That spawned growth in the use of IT for care in the city over the next decade. And as National Coordinator for Health IT until 2016, DeSalvo guided federal strategic efforts to improve data flow between care stakeholders.HealthTech spoke to DeSalvo, now a professor at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, about the modern state of health IT, her work at the Office of the National Coordinator and the importance of emphasizing social determinants of health in patient care.
