In primary care we see a high volume of upper and lower respiratory infections. Just last week, I evaluated an upper respiratory infection, an asthma exacerbation and a possible pneumonia vs. COPD exacerbation all in the same morning clinic. Primary care providers are constantly under fire for overprescribing antibiotics. However, some patients actually have community-acquired, hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated pneumonia and must receive appropriate antibiotics.
