The experience of ageing is changing in many ways. Mainly due to the numerous advances in technology and medical research that are occurring. In fact, the care and advice that folks over 60 can expect in the next ten years are vastly different from what has come before. With the future of ageing set to be almost unrecognisable. A topic you can read more about in the post below.

A shift to aging well

There is a definite shift going on in relations to how we see ageing. In fact, if used to be that people dreaded getting older because of the inevitable health problems and decline in function that went along with it.

However, this is now not necessarily the case. In fact, many people are now looking forward to their older years, as a time when they can live their lives for themselves. Without the responsibilities of raising a family or work getting in the way.

Of course, along with this seachange, a different attitude to health and wellness in later life is emerging as well. One based around the ideals of Functional Medicine to facilitate ageing well. Something that can help many people stay happier, healthier, and more vital as they get older.

Implantable defibrillators

One of the most significant issues that people face, as they age, are problems with their heart, such as heart attacks. The good news is that in the future, the impact of such issues may be a lot less severe due to the use of technology such as implantable defibrillators.

In fact, such devices work similarly to pacemakers. However, instead of regulating the rhythm of the heart, they would be able to restart it if it were to be arrested at any time. Something that means the treatment the patient would receive would be almost instantaneous. Therefore providing them with a much better chance of recovery, as well as a better opportunity of survival until they could access medical attention. This being something that could extend the life of many of our current ageing population.

The problem of dementia

Another major issue concerning ageing right now is dementia. Unfortunately, despite all of our technological and research breakthroughs, we are still not at the point where we can completely prevent or eradicate this heartbreaking disease.

However, there is a great deal of scientific research being done in this area. This includes work on the factors that may be responsible for it, as well as things that can hasten or slow its development. Something that may mean it is a much more manageable condition for the older generation of the future that for any that have preceded it.

The importance of mental health

Finally, we are seeing changes in how we approach mental health for older people as well.

In fact, the importance of staying happy and connected is being emphasised more than it has ever been. Which bodes well indeed for the experience of ageing we can expect in the not too distant future.
