Those suffering from hearing loss will have either conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss or a combination of both. Sensorineural hearing loss means that the nerves of the ear have become damaged so that sound signals can no longer properly reach the brain. This type of hearing loss occurs when the hair cells in the inner ear are damaged by noise, underlying health conditions or aging factors. Conductive hearing loss occurs when the middle or outer ear is damaged so that sounds are prevented from reaching the inner ear. Conductive hearing loss can be caused by many factors including ear infections, a perforated ear drum or a malformation of the ear. There are several different ways in which hearing loss can be treated.

Hearing aids

Hearing aids are worn either inside or behind the ear. They are electronic devices which function to amplify sounds. A hearing aid consists of a speaker, amplifier and a microphone. The amplifier receives sound waves and then transfers them to the ear using the speaker. An audiologist will be able to recommend a hearing aid based on an individual’s needs and degree of hearing loss. ‘Behind the ear hearing aids’ are one common type. These generally work via a piece of tubing which is attached to an earmold. Some people prefer ‘in-the-canal ‘ hearing aids which fit inside your entire ear. These are less visible, yet are sometimes not suitable for those with more severe hearing loss. You can also get ‘invisible in the canal’ devices; these will be fitted deep inside the ear by an audiologist.

Cochlear implants

Cochlear implants work by bypassing the damaged part of the ear to reach the hearing nerve. Cochlear implants stimulate the hearing nerve so that the user can hear sounds with greater clarity as well as volume. Generally, cochlear implants are recommended for those with more significant cases of hearing loss. A cochlear implant is made up of an implant under the skin and an external sound processor. Both parts work as one to send sounds to the hearing nerve.

Tinnitus treatment

The treatment required often depends on the kind of hearing loss that you experience. Tinnitus is a hearing condition that involves hearing sounds inside your ears like buzzing, ringing or clicking. When there is little background noise, the effects of the condition can be worse. Tinnitus will often be treated with special hearing aids that attempt to block out the phantom sounds produced. If you believe that you are suffering from tinnitus, it’s a good idea to learn more about the other treatments available. One associated treatment is CBT therapy. Cognitive behavioural therapy is used to focus on the emotional impacts of the condition.

Hearing loss can be a frustrating experience, but with the right treatment those with hearing loss can greatly improve their quality of life. You should address any hearing problems as soon as you notice the effects. Leaving hearing problems undiagnosed can mean that the condition could become worse over time. An audiologist can assess your type of hearing loss and offer the right treatment for you. In some cases, surgery may be used to treat hearing loss. Refer here for best hearing aids.
