The eye examination is an integral examination that depicts our general health status. Most people have their general health examination scheduled, but unless required, people don’t schedule the eye examination periodically. Whereas, in reality, apart from your sleeping time, you use your eyes for almost all the activities throughout the day. Therefore, you must get your eyes examined periodically at your nearest reliable eye care center to ensure the well-being of your vision. If you are concerned about the process of an eye examination, our eye care professionals at Advance Eye Care Center have described all the basic tests that will happen during the appointment. Let’s keep reading further to know more about the examination process: –

  1. Visual acuity examination– This is the famous test you probably imagine yourself with. Closing one eye at a time, you will read letters from the sign that is a few feet away from you. After that, you will be assigned the visual acuity score based upon the standard 20/20 marks.
  2. Retinoscopy– Retinoscopy is performed using the machine called a phoropter. It allows the optometrist to rule out the prescription. In this test, you will focus on a letter in front of your eyes. At the same time, the physician flips through different lenses on your vision direction. He then shines light through several lenses to see how light affects your eyes passing through different lenses.
  3. Refraction examination– This test is used to rule out the refractive error in your vision to figure out your prescription number for visual aid. You are made to read the eye chart for examination, and multiple lenses are used as an aid for your eye to rule out which one offers a clear vision.
  4. Peripheral field examination– This test is used to evaluate the visual field area of our eyes. Several types of automated tests exist for peripheral field examination, including: –
  • Automated perimetry- You focus on a point in the machine, and whenever you observe the light in the peripheral visual field range, you press the button for confirmation.
  • Tangent screen examination- In this test, you focus your eyes on the target and tell the examiner whenever you see the objects moving in and out of the range of peripheral vision.
  • Confrontation visual field examination- In this test, the examiner sits opposite to you, and you focus on each other eyes. After this, the examiner moves his fingers in all directions to test the range of peripheral vision.
  1. Keratometry examination– This test is used to check the shape and curve of the cornea and how light is perceived in it. Optometrists used this test to examine astigmatism. In this test, you are seated on the other side of the machine, where the dimensions of the cornea are examined by the expert for any anomaly.
  2. Intraocular examination– Intraocular examination is done to test the pressure build up in your eyes due to the fluid present in them. When the pressure measured in your eyes is exceeding beyond the normal range, it could be a sign of Glaucoma. For this test, you will be seated on the other side of the machine, and a sharp puff of air will be focused on your eye. Due to the sudden burst of air puff that is focused on your eyes, you will be taken aback. The machine, therefore, calculates the pressure of your eyes and resistance against it. Your optometrist will examine the eye pressure by manual instruments as well for confirmation. Before that, eye drops will be poured in your eyes so that you don’t feel the instrument in your eyes. It is an entirely painless examination process.

Having said that, these are all the tests that happen during the eye examination. These are some of the necessary tests that will depict the general health of your eyes. It is vital to get your eyes examined so that your vision remains bright and healthy for decades ahead.
