We are all well aware of the need to look after ourselves. We are often bombarded with messages from the media telling us to get outside, exercise more, eat more healthily and look after our mental health. As such, we join gyms, fill up our free time with jogging in the great outdoors and our shopping overflows with the latest super fruits. However, most of our wellbeing drive takes place in our own time, our free time, yet we spend a lot of our time at work. As such, today we want to share a few tips around how to look after yourself in the workplace, as we often neglect to take the same care of ourselves when we are working.

Ensure that you are comfortable in your environment

The first place to start is to ensure that you are comfortable in your environment.

If you have a regular workstation, then ask your employer to carry out a risk assessment on it so that you can be sure that you are working safely. We often sit at desks for long periods of time or stand up carrying out manual labor, and all can result in chronic pain in need of chiropractic adjustment. This can often be avoided if your workstation is suitably adjusted and if you build in regular breaks to move around.

In addition to your body’s position, think about the natural light that you have access to, and if not natural, is the lighting sufficient? Dimmed or poor lighting can put a strain on your eyes and cause headaches and migraines over the longer term.

Encourage others to help you to improve your workplace

You can make it a team effort by encouraging others to improve your workplace too. Speak to your manager about your desire to make the workplace a healthy environment for everyone, pointing out how a positive work environment tends to lead to a more productive team.

You might get an initiative going to hold yoga sessions at lunchtime, you might have a dietitian as a guest speaker at a team meeting or perhaps you could volunteer in the community to boost your mental health.

Look after yourself

Having looked around at your workplace and everything that your employer is responsible for, you then need to ensure that you look after yourself.

Aim to drink plenty of water every day and always keep a glass or bottle on your workstation to remind you to keep on drinking and stay hydrated.

When you do have breaks, make a point of moving around and getting away from any screens to give your body a break. Where possible, take a healthy snack or lunch to work with you.

Know your rights

Finally, it is important that you know your rights at work. All too often, employees put up with inadequate working conditions simply because they are unaware of their rights.
